Doula Services

As Blissful Herbs has grown and flourished, I have found my life full and busy with attending births, birth activism, continuing study, my brand new website www.blissfulherbs.com.au, herbal consultations and of course - looking after my own beautiful family! My 4 are now aged 12 to 24 and their lives are as busy and active as mine (mad, noisy household, come and visit).

Lately, I am available only to attend homebirths within an hour's drive of my home in Warburton. So if you are planning a local-area homebirth, please do contact me.

If you are seeking birth support further afield, for your planned home, birth centre or hospital birth, please scroll down the right-hand side column to find "Seeking a Midwife" and "Seeking a Doula". These private midwives and doulas are wonderful women who are an asset to your birth team. I suggest you chat with several and choose the person you feel most comfortable with.

Please feel free to email  or phone me if you are having any problems finding someone to support you through your pregnancy, birth and post-natal time. I have an email list of midwives and doulas who I recommend and who are available to take clients.

I would also like to introduce to you my fabulous new website:

Water Birth

Immersion in deep warm water is highly rated for comfort and coping during labour.

You don't have to actually give birth *in* the pool unless you want to. Nothing wrong with using the pool as a labour activity and support measure. You can hop in and out as you please. You can certainly go right ahead and have your baby (and even the placenta) while actually in the pool, if you please.

So here, in one place, is your trove of links and info for all things water birth.

General education:

Water Birth International - Barbara Harper

Waterbirth - from the Gentle Birth Archives

The Evidence on Water Birth - from Evidence Based Birth

Birth, Bath, and Beyond: The Science and Safety of Water Immersion During Labor and Birth (2014)

Where to buy a birth pool:

Pregnancy Birth & Beyond - Jane Palmer

Birth Afloat - New South Wales

Simply Birth - Immerse Yourself

Which birth pool? Comparison chart

Things I have learned, from supporting many women during their planned home water births:

* Fill with a food grade hose. Empty with a garden hose.

* A new liner is worth it.They're like $65.00

* Pump up the pool 3/4 - THEN put the liner in place, then pump up the rest of the way.

* Giving it a trial run is worth it - mostly so you can figure out how long pumping it up takes and if all the tap attachments and hot water supply are going to behave themselves. Besides, a family spa pool night is fun. Also - the trial run will let you know if anything needs patching. (Once, I had my husband in the kitchen of my client's house, frantically holding the hose in place on the kitchen tap to stop it spurting everywhere - with his back discreetly turned while the client birthed her baby just round the corner ... Yep, pretty much, good to check those tap attachments before Baby Day!)

* Buy a decent pump. I like foot pumps over electric pumps.

* You can fill the pool half or 3/4 in early labour and keep it warm with bubble wrap (or better still, a pool cover) until you're ready to immerse yourself.

* Yes, boiling huge pots of water still has a place at the modern birth.Especially if your hot water service isn't brilliant.

* Have a bucket or two, in case you need to empty out cooler water to replace with warmer water or vice versa.

* Birth soup is not as nice as Bone Broth. So, yes ... invest in that pool emptying suction device.

* Used pool liners have multiple uses in the shed or garden. I cut up an old pool liner to extend the water-proofing around the edge of our yurt.

* Buy a massive army-worthy duffle bag, because you are never getting that beast back in the small freakin' bag they come in.

* When you fold and unfold the pool, do it in a really warm room or after letting it soften in the sun for a little while - it makes it so much easier, and also it will help prevent damage to the pool.

* If you don't use a liner, I clean the pool with gentle soap and water, rinse it well then let it dry in (gentle) sunlight - UV rays kill germs.

* Yes, you will need a pooper-scooper.

* Blood loss - a small amount of blood can make the pool look really red. Scoop some out into a clear glass of water to assess better. Also be aware, if the room is dark and there are large clots sunk to the bottom, there could be more blood loss than you realise. So, be aware of vital signs and how 'with it' the mother feels and seems. And hop out of the pool if you have any doubts or concerns about what is going on with blood loss.

* Ick stuff in the water - best thing ever for baby's micro-biome. If you siphon your birth soup out into the garden, whatever plants in the firing line will be very happy.

* Temperature: if it feels right for you, it's right. I've never used a thermometer. Just have a little hot water ready for baby, because a hard working mama in the pushing stage usually likes the water a tad cooler than a newborn baby, and you can be so besotted with baby-gazing that people might not notice that the water temperature has cooled a little. So, a room heater, warm towels & cloths and a bit of extra hot water at hand can be a good idea, to help both mother and babe stay toasty warm (which is important for those third stage hormones, right?)

* If your budget allows, consider buying something like a Birth Pool in the Box Professional and a stack of pool liners - and then being the local "hire a birth pool" person that other women can rent a pool from. Way to win friends and influence people eh.

RESEARCH ON WATERBIRTH:

The latest is this one:

What happens when researchers are able to look at more than 17500+ waterbirths and match them with a control of 17500+ land births? By looking at 80+ confounders, the researchers were able to take the most detailed ever look at all of the factors that affect waterbirth outcomes."

From Uplift Labs/Oregon State University.

Key findings:

Waterbirth is neither as harmful as some current guidelines suggest, nor as benign as some proponents claim.

Importantly, there was no difference in the number of neonatal deaths between babies born underwater and those born on land."

 "Lift up your heads, O you gates;

be lifted up, you ancient doors,

that the King of glory may come in. ...

Who is he, this King of glory?

The Lord, strong and mighty.

The Lord, mighty in battle,

He is the King of glory."

Psalm 34:9-10

Have you ever read these exhilarating, symbolic words and wondered if it could even be a reference to the opening of your cervix during childbirth?

I have!

We know from experience that when we are caught up in the presence of God, aware of His glory all around, childbirth is easier!

Jesus is Immanuel, the God who is with us, the God who is for us, our Ezer who is our ever-present help in time of challenge.

There is no better time to fix our eyes on Jesus, and no better labour activity than worship.

So here is a brand new resource, created by a doula with decades of experience in supporting parents through their baby-having adventures, who has witnessed the goodness of God and the power of God at births.

God is with you and He is for you.

Ancient Gates is about prospecting for the treasures in the word of God (the Bible) for child-bearing, and laying hold of those promises for your felt, lived experience.

The Ancient Gates Prayers & Promises for Pregnancy & Birth includes:

- Introductory booklet

- A set of 24 full colour 10 x 10 cm cards

- A wood card display stand

- A Download Card with code to download the 24 spoken meditations set to original music beautifully composed for this project; plus a bonus 18 instrumental-only tracks.

- A USB with track details and high-quality WAV files

- A hand-crafted walnut Keepsake Box for your cards, USB and baby's cord tie

All this for the great value price of $85.00 - and, as an introductory offer, for the first 50 customers ... it's only $79.95 - but seriously be quick because these are selling super fast.

The cards and music lead you on a journey through four movements:

Firstly, "Prepare", with the six cards and meditations for: Breathe, Quiet, Wait, Safe, Soft and Surrender.

The second movement is "Pilgrimage", with the focus words: Trust, Stand, Move, Dance, Open and Joy.

The third movement is "Challenge" with meditations on the words Sing, Cry, Courage, Strength, Deep and Rest.

The concluding movement is "Celebration" in which we explore together the themes of Peace, Comfort, Bless, Glory, Love, and finally, Thanks.

On the front of each card is the focus word, with a simple blessing or affirmation or expression of faith, along with a real birth action shot from beautiful mothers who contributed to this most special resource.

Turn the card over, and you'll see the corresponding Scripture verse to that particular word.

Then you press 'play' on your playlist, and listen to the prayerful spoken meditations set to the most beautiful, anointed, evocative worship music, each piece especially composed for the 24 meditations.  As you listen, you are drawn even deeper into the presence of God as you mull over the incredible riches of God's Word. Your faith is inspired, and you become aware of God's faithfulness to you and His amazing watch-care over you and your baby and your family.

Then, for times when you may be resting or perhaps going through your pregnancy exercises, there are 18 additional tracks with just the music, without the spoken prayers.

There is a synergy in the incredible talents that have come together to make this project happen.

It feels as if the breath of the Spirit has infused the work, each step of the way.

I sense this is something really special, because each time I work on this project ... I cry!

How to prepare the perfect herbal bath for ultimate in luxurious pampering

Other than a full body massage with hot stones, I think a hot bath is my favourite way to unwind!

No longer do you have to pour in products full of nasty chemicals to achieve a truly blissful pampering bath of utter luxury.

You can use herbs from your garden, add magnesium salts and a few drops of your favourite essential oils.

If you're using your gorgeous Blissful Herbs bath blends, here's what to do, step by step.

Start with your loose bath herbs:

And fill up your muslin drawstring bag with a generous amount:

Use an old pantyhose if you don't have a muslin bag!

Pull the drawstring and place your herbal sachet in a container - a Pyrex bowl is perfect.

Then pour on boiling water from the kettle, enough to fully immerse the herbal sachet.

Cover with a lid (I just use a plate) and leave to steep while you run your bath, to prevent the precious essential oils from escaping.

After a good 10 minutes or more of steeping, the herbal liquid should be quite dark brown. Now pour the entire contents of the bowl into your warm bath - wet sachet and all.

Step in, gently stir with your body .... and let your cares drift away ...

You can scatter Pretty Petals on the herb-scented bath water

And of course, babies and toddlers are most welcome to join you!

However .... herbal baths are so popular, that you might need to barricade the door ... or while you quickly field a phone call, your children might beat you to it (true story!)

Brianna ran this lovely bath for herself, a well-deserved treat:

Then raced to the loo, and by the time she got back:

Huh. #mumlife

Choosing which of our fabulous, utterly decadent bath blends is quite a challenge ...

A Plague* on All Our Houses - how to beat the Dreaded Lurgy

It's that time of year again ... colds and coughs and flu and all kinds of nasty random viruses running amok, rendering whole households sick with fever, aches and pains, sore throats, lingering coughs, horrendous sinus infections and tsunamis of snot.

It's not fun - from the baby who can't stop crying and is so stuffed up she can't breathe properly and keeps coming off the breast - to the kids who end up taking days off school - to the Mums who end up crawling from couch to bed - to the Dads who end up home from work with the most dreaded malady of all: Man Flu!

So here are few strategies and remedies for boosting your family's immune systems and hopefully avoiding a round of the "Plague", and for alleviating the worst of the symptoms if hard times do dare come 'round your cabin door.

1. Vitamin C, Zinc and Echinacea. Grab some capsules from your Chemist. Be generous with the citrus fruit, berries and beauties like feijoyas. Add a bit of red meat to the menu for the Zinc, if you're an ominvore.

2. Active Manuka Honey. This stuff is awesome for sore throats and general immune-boosting properties. You can add it to herbal teas. There's also my herb-infused hone mel: Herbal Honey, with Sage, Thyme, Lavender, Oregano and Rose.

3. Elderberries (Sambuccus nigra). These delicious little berries, as well as being loaded with Vitamin C and anti-oxidants, have anti-viral and immune-enhancing properties as well. They are ideal to add to the pantry to prevent and treat influenza, the common cold and other acute viral infections. They have a delicious blackcurrant-type taste, which is handy when you want something that tastes great to convince unwell children to take. You can buy whole organic Elderberries from Blissful Herbs if you would like to make your own Elderberry Cordial (recipe here), or, we can post you a 200 ml bottle of this cordial for $20.00

This cordial is kid-friendly. They can take it right off the spoon, or you can add to it cold or hot water. Best idea ever - add natural gelatine for special "make you better" jelly or even gummy bears! Winner!

Next thing to have in your survive-the-plague arsenal:

4. Olive Leaf Extract. You can purchase this in liquid or capsule form. Olive Leaf Extract enhances immune system functioning and is helpful for the management of viral infections. Studies were able to establish that two of the constituents in the olive leaf are effective against viruses involved in influenza and other respiratory infection.

60g Cold & Flu Blitz tea, $10.00

5. Cold & Flu Blitz tea.
You're likely to find such herbal blends in Health Food Stores and some Pharmacies - or you can order from Blissful Herbs and we will post to you. We have this stuff on the go all day everyday if ever the "plague" should darken our door. Our Cold & Flu Blitz tea - made with a squeeze of lemon and a dollop of Herbal Honey - is so soothing for a raw, inflamed throat, reduces fever and it's amazing - all our symptoms seem much less severe and recovery is quicker. We have kid-friendly, pregnancy-friendly and breastfeeding-friendly variations of this tea, so the whole family can partake. Even better - you can make a concentrated brew of the tea into gummy bears" just like the Elderberry cordial!

That's a turtle-shaped Cold & Flu tea gummy - with a bite taken out! Yum yum!
6. Healing soup or broth. Isn't it amazing how many cultures have variations of healing chicken soup? Chinese, Jewish, Russian, Indonesian and African cultures all have wonderful recipes and nourishing traditions based on this idea - and in each continent, locally available roots, berries, herbs and fungi are used to enhance the healing and immmune-boosting properties. Here is my own recipe for Love Soup. The healing roots within this recipe (Astragalus, Withania, Schisandra, Echinacea etc) may be purchased from Blissful Herbs.

7. Immunity Bliss herbal tea. Herbal medicine offers some super boosters for the immune system and I have blended some of these beauties into a delicious tea, which can be drunk all year round and especially when you or your loved ones need to enhance their own natural flu-fighting powers. This tea contains herbs such as Astragalus, Cat's Claw, Calendula, Echinacea, Lemongrass, Rosehip, Cornflower Petals and Siberian Ginseng.

8. The wonder-working power of medicinal mushrooms! Called mushrooms, but really fungi, the healing and strength-giving properties of these little beauties are quite under-estimated in the western world - but well understood throughout Asia. You can buy Shitake, Reishi, Cordyceps and Oyster mushrooms at Health Food Stores and Asian Groceries. We have Shitake on sale at our local IGA! They usually come dried, you soak them in warm water for a while, then they're easy to chop and add to any cooked dish. They don't have a strong taste so they're an easy add. You definitely want some of these on your pantry shelf during cold and flu season. As well as amazing immune-boosting properties, these 'shrooms are also wonderfully strength-giving and a great boon for fatigue, depletion and convalescence. You can also buy mushroom blends in powdered form and capsule form, such as the Mushroom 5 Complex by Herbs of Gold.

What else to have in the pantry during these testing times?

9. GARLIC! The humble Allium sativum is not just a pretty taste - it's also known as Nature's anti-biotic. Garlic contains the all-important allicin which has potent anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic, anti-fungal and anti-oxidant properties. As well as boosting immunity and supporting the body to fight infection, it also modifies gut flora and so instructs us in the connection between healthy gut flora and a strong immune system. Use garlic liberally in your cooking - but choose locally grown organic if you can - and use it raw or nearly raw - add it at the END of cooking, rather than the beginning, to preserve the allicin - that good stuff that you want in your innards! If you are worried about garlic breath, there are many capsule formulations available, such as the Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract Immune Formula.

And this of course brings our attention to all the gut-healing strategies to have in our flu-fighting arsenal, such as:

10. Pro-biotics - a good quality one - and avoid chlorinated water while you're taking them (now's the time for a good filter if you don't already have one). Also: naturally fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kombucha, kefir and fermented fruit and vegetables - see this post for all the details on how to get your guts healed without breaking the bank balance.

Now while we're discussing fermenting stuff in jars and having curious-looking things percolating quietly away on the pantry shelf ..... have you ever heard of this:

11. The Master Tonic Some people swear by it. Can't hurt, huh. Give it a try and let me know!

12. Vitamin D This is vital for the immune system. We get less sunlight in the winter and what happens? We get sick. If you're prone to Seasonal Affective Disorder, this may be an indication that you need to bolster your Vitamin D. Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D when it's at home) boosts cathelicidin, which is a naturally occuring broad-spectrum anti-biotic in the body (it is an anti-microbial polypepetide). Most moderns have sub-par Vitamin D levels. So we need to be copycats: literally - copy your cat! Notice how she's a heat-seeking missile for pools of winter sun. Make like a cat and bare your skin in the winter sun (coming in through a window is good - so you don't freeze to death ....) Also: if you can't sunbathe, get your mushrooms to do it for you. Let your mushrooms sit in the sun and soak up the Vitamin D before you use them. Yes, this is one way to up your Vitamin D levels! And of course, take a good quality Vitamin D capsule through the winter.

13. Herbal Medicine If you know a Naturopath or Herbalist (*waves*), they will be able to prepare you a tincture of liquid herbal medicine or extract (herbs extracted in alcohol or glycerin) specific to your needs. Excellent immune-boosting herbs we may select for you include Andrographis, Liquorice Root, Echinacea, Olive Leaf, Baptisia, Mullein, Elecampane, Adhatodha and Elder, depending on your symptoms and needs. You generally take 5 ml in a little water or juice, 3 times a day, or 7.5 ml twice daily.

(* Apologies to dear Mr Shakespeare .... I do realise it's meant to be, "A pox on all your houses". Just elaborating on a theme for the purposes of poetic license. I'm sure the Bard would understand).

Praying for birth - prayers and scriptures

This is a prayer guide we gave our birth team and close friends to use as they prayed for us during the births of our babies. Instead of writing a “Birth Plan”, we came up with a “Prayer Plan”.

(We did not really need a birth plan because we had a homebirth and felt free to do as we pleased - but if you do wish to have a birth plan - here's an example of a pretty comprehensive one.)

Not everyone is familiar with how to pray for a natural birth because many people expect that the woman just goes off to hospital and the medical staff take care of everything.

This guide is not a blue-print, just some ideas. You could write your own tailor-made prayer guide to suit your unique situation.

So here goes:

REQUEST FOR  PRAYER

Thank you for praying for us during the time of the birth of our precious baby! We appreciate your prayer support during this significant time. The baby’s estimated due date is:

The Bible is full of promises concerning childbirth and parenthood. Thank you for believing for these blessings to be appropriated in our lives.

The devil hates birth, because of his enmity against women (Genesis 3:15) and their offspring, that is, his hatred for human life generally, because he is a murderer. Also the devil hates childbirth because every birth is a reminder to him of the birth of our Saviour Jesus.  Jesus is the Giver of Life. He has come to destroy all the works of the evil one and to give life abundantly. Christ has redeemed us from the curse. (Gal. 3:13)

God intends for childbirth to be a special experience of blessing and family celebration in the safety of His presence. When the Lord is given total control and the enemy is bound from interfering with or sabotaging the birth, it does not have to be an experience of pain, stress or suffering. Jesus has taken up our suffering for us. (Is. 53: 4-5)

It is awesome to think that even Jesus himself grew in his mother’s womb and experienced the journey down the birth canal.

Birth is a sacred mystery. Even the medical experts do not know exactly what triggers labour. But the Word of God tells us that it is the Lord who brings us to delivery and opens the womb. (Isaiah 66:9). Several times in Psalms it says that it is the Lord who ‘delivers us from our mother's womb’. We are the people of His pasture, the sheep of His hand. Think of how a shepherd assists the ewes at lambing time. Jesus is our Good Shepherd, who tends His flock like a shepherd and gently leads those who are with young. (Isaiah 40:11). What a beautiful promise that reveals to us the tender heart of the Lord for women in childbirth.

Truly, we are in good Hands – in the Lord’s expert care.

We know that when we pray, we should pray with faith and confidence. Simply coming into the Lord’s presence with thanksgiving, praise, and songs of love and worship to Him releases faith. We can sing praises to the Lord throughout the labour and delivery. We can pray specifically, according to God’s Word. We can ‘mirror’ His Word back to Him – not that He needs reminding, but hearing our own lips confess it builds our faith! (Romans 10:17) The prayer of agreement is powerful. (Matthew 18:19).

It is good to know that we have a body of believers standing with us in prayer during this time. Thank you! May God bless you.

Please pray and agree with us (Matt 18:19):

GENERALLY:

* for a safe, easy birth with no complications. (Isaiah 53:4-5; Galatians 3:13,14; Deut. 28:2-11)

* that like the Hebrew women, I will be ‘lively and vigorous’ in labour and have an effective that progresses well.(Exodus 1:19)

* a fear-free and therefore pain-free birth. Labour is just that: labour (hard work) but with God it does not have to hurt. Pray that the ‘fear-tension-pain’ cycle will be broken, and that we will all rest in the Lord’s love, trusting him. I am redeemed from the curse of the law.
(1 John 4:18; 2 Timothy 1:7; Isaiah 41:10; Gal 3:13).

* for a birth that glorifies God and is a blessing to everyone present. (Psalm 100)  For an atmosphere of peace and worship as we keep our eyes on Jesus and enjoy his presence, praising him (Phil. 4:7). The Lord is in control of the labour and delivery. (Psalm 22:9)

- for joy (Nehemiah 8:10)
- for strength (Phil. 4:13)
- for help & blessing (Gen. 49:25)
- for safety & wholeness - in spirit, soul and body, of baby & mother (1Tim. 2:15)
- for courage (Psalm 31:24)
- for protection (Psalm 91:14)
- for faith (1 John 5:14-15)
- for wisdom (Prov. 2:6)
- for unity – the Lord, mother, father, baby, the midwife, and the labour support person(s) = the Birth Team. (Psalm 133)

BEFORE THE BIRTH, PLEASE PRAY:

* for a good, safe birthing place with skilled birth attendants who can provide sensitive, personalized care.

* for a good midwife who is skilled, compassionate and sensitive. (“When you help the Hebrew women in childbirth and observe them upon the delivery stool...” Exodus 1:16) To help and to observe is just what a good midwife does. (‘Midwife’ means, ‘with woman’) ‘Upon the stools’ implies a vertical position which allows the birthing process to benefit from gravity. “So God was kind to the midwives .. and because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.”  Exodus1:20,21)

* that technical intervention will be used wisely, only if truly necessary; that I will be supported to give birth naturally. Pray that the medical personnel/midwife will have the mind of Christ.

* for a woman friend or doula who is kind and prayerful, to be with my husband and I during the birth as the labour support person.

* that the baby will be ready to be born, emotionally as well as physically, in a good head-down, anterior position. That the baby will present well with the head well flexed, no asynclitism or malpresentation. (Psalm 71:5,6)

* that the labour will begin at the Lord’s appointed time, that mother, father & baby will be built up in faith, relaxed and ready. (Isaiah 66: 7-10)

* for financial provision for the payment of the midwife & birth supplies. (Phil. 4:19)

* that the waters will break at the right time, not too soon before labour commences.

* that the placenta will be in the right position, well up and away from the cervix.

* that the umbilical cord will be in the right position, not wrapped around the baby’s head or any other part of the baby’s body, and will not prolapse ahead of the baby.

* that the cervix will soften, ripen, efface and begin to dilate.

* “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body.” Psalm 139:13-15

FOR FIRST STAGE, PLEASE PRAY:

* that my womb will be blessed, having strong, regular contractions that are effective but not painful (Deuteronomy 7:13; Genesis 49:25).

* that the cervix will dilate easily, quickly and efficiently.

* that my body will relax and yield, that I will be kept in perfect peace in my spirit and soul as I stay my mind on Jesus, so that it is only the uterus that tenses up during the powerful muscular contractions (Isaiah 26:3).

* that my hormones will be blessed - that my body will release plenty of oxytocin (which causes contractions) and endorphins (natural pain-inhibitors) - but not adrenalin, which is part of the stress response, and inhibits the release of oxytocin, until transition, when adrenalin will give me the energy boost to birth my baby. Bless my hypothalamus and pituitary gland.

* for an atmosphere of privacy, quietness, safety and respect that will allow my hormones to flow unhindered.

* for a wide, open, roomy pelvis that is supple and flexible

FOR SECOND STAGE, PLEASE PRAY:

* for safe passage for the baby down through the birth canal, easily and unhindered, with a good oxygen supply throughout birth (no foetal distress). (Isaiah 46:4)

* that my body will be able to push easily and effectively, working along with the uterus to expel the baby. (Psalm 18:32)

* that the tissues of the perineum will stretch gently and easily, fanning out to allow the baby through, for slow, gradual crowning of the head, with no tearing or episiotomy.

* that the baby will breathe spontaneously after being born, have clear airways and have good ‘Apgars’ (assessment of the newborn’s overall condition at 1 minute and 5 minutes after birth.)

FOR THIRD STAGE, PLEASE PRAY:

* for a blessed bonding time between mother and baby immediately after birth, in the Lord’s presence.

* that the baby will be able to suckle at the breast, to help the uterus to contract, clamp down and expel the placenta.

* that the placenta will detatch safely, be intact, and be delivered without delay, with no haemorrhage; that the uterus will contract down well after the expulsion of the placenta.

* that breastfeeding will be established well, no sore nipples, infections etc.
(Gen. 49:25 “blessings of the breast”; Isaiah 66:11)

* for no excessive jaundice for the baby and for good health generally for the baby.

* for good rest for the new mother after the birth, and no post-natal depression.

Thank you so much!

DISCLAIMER!!!

OK darling sisters in Christ - you know how sometimes in Christianity, people come up with some ideas and opinions about how to do life - and then suddenly it becomes some kind of full-on doctrine? And just more hoops for people to jump through - even a kind of legalism? (I hope you haven't had this experience, but it does happen).

Let this not be the case here! I offer this only with grace. This is simply *our* experience. It's not meant to be prescriptive or instructional.

As with anything in our walk with God, it's meant to be in the context of your intimate relationship with him. Perhaps, possibly something you've read here might inspire or encourage you and end up being part of a little chat with God about YOUR heart's desires and his loving will and purpose and heart for you.

There's no one "right way" here, so I just bless you to be led by the Holy Spirit, and follow your heart as He prompts you. I like what Jackie Mize wrote in "Supernatural Childbirth": "Have as much sense as an old cow. Chew on the grass and spit out the sticks." Take what's helpful and never mind the rest. This is what helped us - your path is very different, totally unique and all yours.

From Dasha:
"Hi Julie! Thanks so much for all the info you have sent.  It is such a blessing!  I had never thought of the fact that Jesus freed us from the curses that may come with pregnancy.  It used to be just a fact that it was something that we had to go through.  We started praying for some pretty specific things, morning sickness, fatigue, ect..  and they have disappeared!  Praise God!"

"Julie! Guess where I am! Currently sitting in your beautiful Post Natal bath filled with your delicious herbs!!

We had an amazing surprise homebirth last Tuesday night! My waters broke at 1 am and by 7:30 am, our daughter was born. Thank you so much for your prayers and blessings for me! I totally felt Gods presence and my husband and I had perfect peace. So much so that we were so calm we left it quite late to call the midwives, who only just arrived in time for her crowning and to catch her!

She was born on my bathroom floor. I Ended up using the Tens machine for most of the birth - I am in love with that thing, it helped me focus and work through the waves. I ripped it off about 6:30 or so and got in the shower... I felt God say to me in there "You'll have a baby by 8 am." I said to myself "Ok, by 10 am" (hoping to give myself some more time for things to slow down!) but God said "No, I said 8 am!"

I got out of the shower and between intense pushing contractions had immense calm. My husband and I even spontaneously starting praying in tongues together.

It was intense and powerful and full on! The midwives arrived just as I was crowning, and hub ripped off his dressing gown just in time to catch her. There was some slight tearing as she superwoman punched her arm out into the world.

Here she is, two weeks early! Her name means Ruler of the Estate which I believe references her leadership calling and the fact that she totally owned her own birth. Blessings to you Julie for your special ministry. "
