We now have two beautiful blends to soothe the sensitive digestive tract during pregnancy. 

The first is the original Mum's Tum tea, with the flavours of Chamomile, Spearmint and Ginger.

The second is ideal for persistent nausea that continues past the first trimester. It's called Cher's Blend, in honour of one of my clients who battled nausea right up until her baby was born! If you like the taste of Chai, the herbs and spices in this tea may suit you.

So first, let me introduce to you the Mums Tum Bliss tea. This is a soothing blend of gentle herbs to help settle nausea & vomiting and relieve heartburn in pregnancy.

The Mum's Tum Bliss tea contains:

* Chamomile - useful to treat digestive upsets including nausea and flatulence. Also helpful for insomnia and anxiety. Has anti-inflammatory properties and is used to encourage digestion and boost the immune system.

* Ginger Root - Ginger is a sweet, pungent and aromatic herb that improves digestion and liver function, controls nausea & vomiting. It stimulates circulation, relaxes spasms and relieves pain. Ginger is used internally for motion sickness, nausea, morning sickness, indigestion & colic. It is a "warming" herb with some immune stimulant and anti-inflammatory properties.

* Spearmint - tastes great and calms the stomach. It is an aromatic herb that improves digestion and relieves spasms. It is helpful for soothing indigestion, flatulence and colic.

* Fennel - counters flatulence, balances stomach acid and relieves stomach cramps & spasms. It also improves appetite and digestion.

* Limeblossom - soothes the intestinal tract, eases indigestion and diarrhoea.

* Marshmallow Leaf - soothes irritation of the mucous lining of the gastro-intestinal tract. It contains polysaccharides which form a protective film over inflamed and irritated mucosal tissue.

Cher's Blend contains the Chai-style spices and subtle citrus tastes. Since it contains a small amount of Red Raspberry Leaf, this tea is more suitable for the second trimester onwards. Keep in mind that I can make you a custom blend, adding in or leaving out any of the ingredients in both these blends, to make you a bespoke blend to suit your sensitive tummy!

Cher's Blend contains:

Red Raspberry Leaf - an astringent indicated for pregnancy sickness which extends into the second trimester

Catnip - with calming sedative actions, helpful for reducing nausea

Basil - mild sedative, helps lift fatigue, reduces nausea, vomiting and indigestion

Nutmeg - an astringent and warming digestive that controls vomiting and relaxes spasm

Cloves - an aromatic digestive and carminative, helpful for reducing nausea and dyspepsia

Lemon Verbena - gently tranquilizing for he nervous system, soothes indigestion and reduces nausea

Lemon Balm - a carminative (reduces flatulence and calms intestinal spasm & pain) with soothing sedative properties; reduces nausea and vomiting.

Ginger - an aromatic digestive with anti-emetic action, specific for nausea including morning sickness

Cinnamon - an aromatic digestive and carminative and mild astringent, helpful for nausea and vomiting. (Avoid medicinal quantities of Cinnamon during pregnancy. Normal culinary use and a small amount in this tea is safe).

Chen Pi - Chinese Mandarin peel - a lovely tasting, aromatic digestive and carminative, helpful for nausea and "digestive weakness".

How to Use:
Use a glass or ceramic pot or jug, and avoid metal implements when making herbal teas. Place about a teaspoon (3-4g) of herbs in your pot or jug, pour on hot water, cover, and allow to steep for about 10 minutes. You can drink the tea hot, warm or cool. Over ice is delicious! You could also add a twist of lemon or lime, or a natural sweetener such as aguave or raw honey, if desired. Sip gradually throughout the day. Store your herbs out of direct sunlight to preserve potency, colour and flavour.

And this article explains that you need plenty of magnesium on board to manage pregnancy sickness. Dandelion and Nettle are very rich in Magnesium and are included in my Pregnancy Bliss tea. Dark green leafy vegetables are rich in Magnesium, and that is what Dandelion and Nettle really are - they grow as weeds in some places (I saw lots of Nettle in Ireland and my little Irish Midwife told me every woman needed nettle tea in her diet) and they both have a very dark green leaf.

This naturopath believes eating plenty of legumes (beans etc) can reduce excess bile and curb nausea. Worth a try, it can't hurt!

Here is Aviva Romm's article about safe herbs for pregnancy. Aviva's perspective is that although there are herbs considered safe for use in pregnancy, overall it is best to avoid medication and herbs during the first trimester, unless medically necessary.

- Pro-biotics
- B Complex vitamins
- Slippery Elm capsules

I'm 10 weeks along in my pregnancy, have heartburn almost all day. I've already modified my diet as many websites recommend. Is it safe to use Marshmallow Root during first trimester?

Most sources consider Marshmallow leaf as safe for use during pregnancy. A few suggest that since there had been no research done on it, to avoid it. So there is empirical knowledge that it is safe, but no scientific research on its use during pregnancy (since there is no money in it). Read more here:

Just wanted to let you know your Mum's Tum blend is a life saver! I'm 7 weeks pregnant and very nauseous and a cup of your tea fixes me right up! Can't wait to order more blends for the birth and recovery!
